Several months ago a family friend was struggling with their finances. They reached out and we started on the journey of turning things around. I’m now 10 solid years into continual optimization of my finances. I can speak pretty intelligently about a lot of topics ranging from budgeting, investing, and credit card hacking.
Its been 10 years since I’ve been in this person’s shoes.
10 years since I’ve been at the very beginning.
For a little bit there I forgot whats that’s like. To put myself in this person’s shoes I had to start asking myself a whole new set of questions.
Where is all the money going?
This is never a question I had to ask myself. I knew where the money was going because I was tracking it. I have to remember that not everyone, actually very few people, nerd out on personal finance like myself.
This person was asking questions like:
- How much do I spend?
- What do I spend my money on?
- How could I spend less?
Those aren’t easy questions to ask and even harder to answer unless you dive right in that is.
So what did I do? I dove right in with them.
Putting numbers to your spending
The great thing is there is a good percentage of people out there that want to do better with their finances. They just don’t quite know the first step in taking that journey.
The person I was helping was like this.
The problem, I realized, was lack of awareness.
Awareness of how much they were spending at the grocery store or at Amazon.
Awareness is often the hardest part because if you don’t have it and you’ve never had it, where do you find it.
So I took her last month of expenses, did a little analysis on them and put the numbers to her. I walked her through how much she made, how much she spent and some ways to move these numbers closer together (she was spending more than she made).
She dropped her spending by 44% the next month. Isn’t that incredible? All it took was awareness and she was willing and able to spend less. The crazy thing is, she saw far less than a 44% drop in her spending.
The Personalized Spending Assessment
I then realized that, the person I was helping wasn’t alone. She was like so many others across our country. The want to do better. They know they NEED to do better. They just don’t know where to start.
The thing I’ve seen time and time again as I help people get their finances going in the right direction is that awareness goes a long way.
If you give people all the information they need they will probably put together a good enough plan to get where they want to go.
For these reasons, I’m launching a new service. I’m calling it the Personalized Spending Assessment.
This assessment is exactly what I did for this family friend when she needed awareness. I will take a month of expenses, analyze and respond with:
- A customized sheet of my analysis showing how much you spent in total and break that down into categories
- Personalized recommendations on how you could cut your spending
- A video walking you through both the analysis as well as my recommendations
I guarantee I’ll save you enough money in one month to pay for this service. All the future months are returns you’ll see on this small investment.
I truly am excited about this service because I know it solves a true need.
